One Page Checkout

One of the most important aspects of any online store is the checkout. A badly designed checkout will lose you sales. Fortunately Shopify have got you covered with one of the highest converting checkouts available. And guess what? Shopify has recently released a new and enhanced one-page checkout experience, and it’s a bit of a game-changer.

Of course, Shopify was already leading the industry with its online checkout experience. Shopify is the web’s best-converting platform, beating the competition by a margin of 15%. However, we think this new one-page system has the potential to further widen that gap, with its fast and intuitive new approach.

What’s New in the Shopify Checkout?

As you will likely be familiar, the Shopify checkout process traditionally consisted of three steps. Customers would be directed through forms dedicated to shipping address, delivery costs and then finally they enter payment details before committing to their order. The new solution takes all that and condenses it into one single page.

The market experts at Shopify stress that these changes are more than purely cosmetic. The new system has been informed by research that shows a one-page checkout has the potential to optimise speed and conversion rates. In short, it makes it easier for your customers to buy from you.

Let’s break it down though, and take a look at the key features on offer in the new Shopify checkout.

Powerful One-Page Checkout Features

Fast and efficient transactions

It means fewer page loads, with secure payment options, comprehensive overviews and streamlined shipping information, all combined into one single page.

Perhaps the most obvious advantage of a one-page checkout, is how it makes the buying process that much faster for your customers. It means fewer page loads, with secure payment options, comprehensive overviews and streamlined shipping information, all combined into one single page.

This helps to create a truly friction-free buying experience, that’ll ensure even more of your page visitors are making it over the finish line.

Improved design

And how did Shopify achieve this exactly? Well, one of the cleverest things the new one-page checkout does, is to auto-collapse pre-filled sections of the form. That means that known and returning buyers can speed right on through to the important questions. Inspired in part by Shopify’s highly successful Shop Pay system, those same benefits and design improvements are now implemented for guest checkouts too.

A checkout you can trust

Shopify’s checkout is perhaps the most recognisable, tried-and-tested online shopping platform in the world.

At this point, Shopify has powered more than half a trillion dollars in online ecommerce sales. Shopify’s checkout is perhaps the most recognisable, tried-and-tested online shopping platform in the world.

It is hugely compliant and widely compatible, and the system has been shown to be able to handle as many as a hundred thousand checkouts per minute. That’s not a bad starting point… but Shopify never sits on its laurels, and the new one-page system just goes to show how they’re always improving, always innovating.

Integration and customisation

As designers, one of the things we love most about Shopify is the almost unlimited potential the platform allows you to make your store stand out from the crowd.

You can use all the power of Shopify’s systems, but in a package that is wonderfully, uniquely, you. And the good news is, Shopify’s one-page checkout doesn’t change this one bit. In fact, all your external apps, customisations, and theme designs will automatically carry over into your new one-page checkout.

How to Upgrade to Shopify One-Page Checkouts

It couldn’t be easier to get started using Shopify’s new features.

If you’re on a Basic, Shopify or Advanced plan, then chances are you’re already looking at it! Checkouts will have been auto-updated to the new one-page system in October 2023. For merchants using Shopify Plus, on the other hand, you’ll need to activate the one-page checkout and you can easily preview the new layout

What about previous checkout customisations?

Shopify Plus merchants still using checkout.liquid customisations will need to upgrade to checkout extensibility in order to take advantage of the update – but that’s an easy process and we are ready to support you with the transition.

Harness the Power of the Perfect Shopify Checkout

Shopify’s new one-page checkout is a game-changer for ecommerce stores, set to improve conversion rates by reducing the steps, and the friction, between customers and their purchases. Simultaneously, it leans into the global trend towards identity-driven sales experiences – so that returning customers and known buyers will be able to speed through their transactions with only the absolute minimum of clicks.
