Initially formed in 2006, Chunk of Devon offer a wide selection of homemade pies, pasties and sausage rolls. With over 175 awards to their name, customers could not get enough of Chunk's delicious produce. In particular, their range of pre-selected selection boxes was hugely popular online. However, as online sales continued to grow, it became clear to Chunk that they needed to free their customers up and let them build their own selection boxes.
The standard selection boxes include a range of different pies & pasties, but when an order is received in Shopify, the order reports the box name. It was then up to the Chunk team to determine which pies needed to be prepared and what quantity.
It was typical for the Chunk team to regularly receive phone calls from customers requesting a mixed box of their favourite pies. This wasn't initially a problem, but as demand grew, so did the frequency of requests, and filtering these custom orders into their team was becoming disruptive to their bake team. The Chunk team knew they had to provide better solutions for both their customers and staff.
Additionally, there were other problems facing the Chunk Team. They were also experiencing growing pains with sales of their standard selection boxes. Selling selection boxes online was familiar to Chunk of Devon. However, the increase in demand added a new challenge to the mix.
Until this point, Chunk had always managed this easily, and it had never crossed their mind to change it. However, since the migration to Shopify, the Chunk team has seen significant growth, and this simple admin task has become a central pain point for the team.
They needed a solution to both these problems, and it turned out that offering customers the opportunity to build their own personal selection boxes was the key to the solution.
The Chunk team already knew they wanted to allow customers to build their personalised selection boxes, and now was the right time. The Inspira team was up to the challenge.
Customers were no longer restricted to prebuilt selection boxes as they could now add all their favourite pies to their personalised boxes.
A new custom selection box builder was designed & developed that allowed Chunk of Devon's customers to create their selection box by adding exactly which pies & pasties they wanted.
This new feature is needed to satisfy the customer's needs and solve the Chunk team's pain points by calculating the number of pies required each day.
So it was important that when a selection box was ordered, the Chunk team would not just receive an order for a 'custom box' with the individual pies hidden within the notes. Still, instead, they would receive the list of all the pies ordered in an easily exportable and manageable way.
It was also crucial to Chunk of Devon that they continued selling the existing selection boxes as they have proved very popular with their customers. So the Inspira team applied the same logic to the predefined selection box products. This enabled Chunk to continue offering their original boxes to customers, but when an order was received, the Chunk team would not need to calculate precisely which pies were required as Shopify did all the hard work for them.
With both these updates in place, we managed to satisfy the needs of not just the customers in the store but also implemented a system that helped the Chunk team significantly improve their internal processes.
Customers could now order the pies they wanted, and the Chunk team got a much-needed quality-of-life upgrade that improved their business.
